This plyer is reserved for MOKIHANA. Please don't purchase it unless it's yours. Thanks!
Please note I've raised the price on my plyers as shipping is $11-13 and my flat rate is $5. It was easier to add a couple dollars to the price of the plyer than adjust my website shipping for just this item.
This wonderful handmade Curly Koa Andean Plyer was handmade by my husband from reclaimed wood. These photos show the exact Plyer you'll receive. I photograph each one individually. Photo showing all the pieces taken apart shows the most accurate color of the wood.
My awesome husband spends hours in his woodshop turning, cutting, sanding and finishing with these "scraps" of wood. I love how the shape of this plyer fits so nicely in my hand and makes plying the "extras" such a pleasant and easy task.
This tool was made from a gorgeous piece of wood from a visit to our good friend who lives in upcountry Maui. He's an amazing old native hawaiian......in his 80's and he has tons of wonderful stories of the old days on the islands. I could sit at his knee and listen for hours. His woodworking skills and his beautiful creations take my breath away! Each year we make sure we take the time to go and visit and gather up some beautiful wood to bring home with us. He told us this particular piece of wood was really old and he collected it from the Waikamoe watershed on Maui. My sweet husband spends hours in his woodshop turning and carving with these precious "scraps". I love how the shape of this plyer fits so nicely in my hand and makes plying the "extras" such a pleasant and easy task.
Koa is the largest endemic tree in Hawai‘i–the species exists naturally nowhere else in the world. It is the fastest growing of Hawaii’s valuable hardwoods. It can grow as much as an inch in diameter per year, reaching 100 feet in height, attaining a trunk diameter of 5 feet or more. It was historically the material of choice for carved ocean-going canoes. Koa wood is the most prized cabinet and furniture wood in Hawai‘i. Colors range from light brown to deep red/brown hues. Highly figured koa is sought after for use in fine furniture, musical instruments, crafts, gunstocks, and knife handles. Koa has weight and strength properties similar to black walnut.
Andean Plying is often done on the hand but this gorgeous tool makes it much more pleasant and with the stand it frees up both hands to use for the plying. With this tool the wool singles are wound onto the handle of the plyer, then pulling out the peg releases the strands which can then be used to ply with. I use mine to utilize any extras left on one (or two in the case of a 3 ply yarn) by taking the leftovers on my one bobbin and turning them into two so I can splice them into my plied yarn. There's a notch at the bottom to hold the singles for starting.

Comments from customers who've used our plyer:
"I really enjoy using my Andean plying tool. It takes all of the stress off of my hand and make Andean plying much more enjoyable. Glens craftsmanship and attention to detail make using this tool a pleasure. I love it!" ~Jen D.~
"My old Andean plying tool was primitive and utilitarian, and although it got the job done, it was not a pleasure to use. What a world of difference it is to use Gift of Grace Handspun’s plying tool! The gorgeous wood is smoothly sanded, and it feels great in the hands. Not only is it a wonderful tool to use, but it is also so beautiful that I am happy to display it proudly among my spinning tools." ~Micki C.~
